PleadingReady is a formatting tool, not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. It only lays out the words you type. Check your court’s rules before you file. Google Docs changes the line spacing: file the PDF, or open the Word file in Word or LibreOffice.
What this tool does, and doesn't do
- It lays out your words. Line numbers, margins, the single-spaced first-page caption and page numbers follow rule 7.20 of the Eighth Judicial District Court Rules (EDCR).
- It doesn't write, check or suggest anything. It never tells you which document to file, which code to use or whether to ask for a hearing. For that, see the court's self-help centre or law library, or a lawyer.
- Your document stays on your device. The PDF and Word file are made in your browser. We never see what you type. Privacy

Which Nevada courts this covers
This format is for the Eighth Judicial District Court, the district court for Las Vegas and the rest of Clark County, on the civil and criminal side. Two things to know:
- Family court has its own format. Under EDCR 5.101(b), rule 7.20 doesn't apply to the family division. Its own rule for motions, oppositions and replies (EDCR 5.504) also asks for numbered lines in a 1-inch margin, but with 14-point type, the court title "DISTRICT COURT / FAMILY DIVISION / CLARK COUNTY, NEVADA" and the document title centred below the caption. This tool doesn't make that format yet.
- Other Nevada counties are in other judicial districts, with their own local rules. Washoe County (Reno) is the Second Judicial District. Check your court's rules before using this format there.
Using a printed form from the clerk or the court's self-help centre? Rule 7.20(g) says those forms don't need this format, apart from the paper size and printing on one side.
The Clark County rules, line by line
| Rule 7.20(a) | White paper, 8½ × 11 inches, one side only. Type no smaller than 12 point. |
|---|---|
| Rule 7.20(a) | Lines double-spaced (descriptions of real property may be single-spaced). Quotations of more than 50 words indented and single-spaced. Pages numbered at the bottom. Lines numbered in a left margin 1 inch wide. |
| Rule 7.20(c)(1) | First page, single-spaced, left of centre from line 1: the clerk’s document code, then your name, address, telephone, fax and email (you may write “no fax number” or “no email address”). The space right of centre is for the clerk. |
| Rule 7.20(c)(2) | “DISTRICT COURT / CLARK COUNTY, NEVADA” centred at line 5 or lower. |
| Rule 7.20(c)(3)–(4) | The case title (the parties) left of centre at line 8 or lower; the case number and department number right of centre at line 10 or lower. |
| Rule 7.20(c)(5) | The document title below the department number, or centred below the parties. Directly below the department number, “Hearing Requested” or “Hearing Not Requested” where rule 2.20 requires it. |
| Rule 7.20(c)(6) | A response or reply about a matter already set for hearing shows the hearing date and time immediately below the title. |
| Rule 7.20(g) | Printed forms from the clerk, the district attorney, the public defender or the court’s self-help centre don’t need this format (except paper size and one side only). |

The document code on line 1
Rule 7.20(c)(1) puts a document code at the very top, on line 1, above your name. The codes come from the clerk, who uses them for court statistics and asks for one code per document, taken from its approved list. The lists are on the clerk'sdocument codes page, one for each kind of case. Type the code in the "Document code" field and the tool puts it on line 1.
Department number and "Hearing Requested"
The case number and the department number go on the right, at line 10 or lower. Directly below the department number, rule 2.20(b) asks motions to say "Hearing Requested" or "Hearing Not Requested". Pick one in the "Hearing line" field, or leave it at "None". The tool only places the line; it doesn't decide which one applies to you. If your document answers a matter already set for hearing, rule 7.20(c)(6) asks for the hearing date and time right below the title: type them in "More lines under the title".
How we read "double-spaced"
Rule 7.20 asks for double-spaced lines numbered in a 1-inch left margin, but doesn’t say how many lines go on a page. We use lines 24 points apart (twice the 12-point type), which fits 28 numbered lines below a 1-inch top margin, the same count as the clerk’s sample page. The details at the top of page 1 are single-spaced, as rule 7.20(c) asks, so two of those lines sit beside each number. Quotations typed with > are indented and single-spaced, because rule 7.20(a) asks for that for quotations over 50 words.
Word, PDF or Google Docs?
- PDF: ready to print, or to upload if you e-file. It's real, searchable text with the font built in.
- Word (.docx): the numbers sit in a fixed column at the left, every 24 points, so the single-spaced caption doesn't change them. Works in Microsoft Word and LibreOffice.
- Google Docs: doesn't keep the number column in place. Use the PDF, or open the Word file in Word or LibreOffice.
